Calculating & Creating

For weeks now, I've been all over the place. Creating & Calculating. Calculating & Creating. Sometimes in  a more than panic mode.

Risking all to start, restart this new/old business is a tough gig, even for those with an unusual amount of FAITH. There are times when I pray myself out of the bed in the morning. There are times when I wake with online friends added to my prayer list. The creating is good these days, but the calculating is so much better.

When the pipes are busted.
When a tree falls.
When a door breaks.
When a pane cracks

The calculating allows one to see the big picture. The calculating allows one to see what could be. The calculating breaks it down in bit size pieces, so we know what to do first. The calculating allows us to be FREE to create ...

When the pipes are busted.
When a tree falls.
When a door breaks.
When a pane cracks

Brio BrainstormN with Tara Gentile

Brio Brainstorm - part of Creating Action, a free email program from Scoutie Girl
Find the Little Things That Put a Hop in Your Step

Tara designed a fun worksheet to help us zero in on what pumps our enthusiasm,it's a fill in the blank work of art. Get your art on, download & fill in the blanks.

My blanks are in red. Here's a sample of her prompts & my ... hmmm

When Iʼm NOT in the kitchen, I am enthusiastic.
When I wear sh?! kicking boots, I feel confident.
When I talk about blogging & the new economy, I get excited & tend to ramble.
When I exercise by George Benson, on Broadway  I have a burst of energy.
When I look around the room, Iʼm most drawn to the color red.
When I visit the country, I feel alive.
When I see old barns, I get hungry for more.
If all my obligations for tomorrow were suddenly dissolved, I would paint for 24 hours straight.

Let the music play

This canvas woke me early this morning, a stored, unfinished relic of yesterday. A long ago yesterday. Thirty two years of yesterdays. How did he make it through all the moves. How did he make it through all the loss. How did he survive & why. Apparently he has something to say. I'm not sure, if he would brave this journey with me to only be silent. Years ago he spoke to me from a magazine. Then, he started to show up every time I went to church. He keep evolving, spinning, twisting ... till finally out of fear, I put him in the back, I stored him away. Cause he had WAY too much to say.

Today, I will begin again with him. I'll put a tune on repeat, till I can feel the beat. Let the music play ...

edit ... it's is Friday & Jennifer's Sneak Peek Fridays are back! She just redesigned her blog on wordpress & it's a pretty clean slate. I love white space!

The Art of public transportation

I did it! I took the bus. Today, for the first time ... EVER, I road this green bus and the irony is I remember editing the copy for this radical transportation move for our city, more than three years ago.

After my court appearance, I walked in the direction of the transportation HUB. I had no idea where it was, but I was confident that HE would keep me safe and secure.

As I got closer to where I thought it was, I spotted this woman with an umbrella and a child. Of course you know my head was covered. I yelled to this stranger as to the location of the Rover and she pointed it out to me. We stood there and chatted, while we waited on the buses. I explained to her how I knew nothing, nothing of this bus riding thing and she explained it all to me and gave me one of her bus passes. I was so giddy to pull the string before my stop, the bus driver thought I was new to the city.

And to think ... the Rover Transportation Hub is right across the street from Moxie Art Supply and Studio School.

HE is always working in the background, as the greatest conductor!

Muffin bread

For the longest time, we didn't have a muffin pan. I don't know why, I never bothered to buy one.
Not having a muffin pan, didn't keep me from creating muffin bread (muffin mix baked in a loaf pan).

Every time I made muffin bread for my two lovelies, the muffin bread story would grow and grow, until one day last year

when we bought a muffin pan and the story seamed to end or did it just begin.

Do yoU listen?

When a tree speaks do yoU listen?

This tree spoke to me while
in the mist of planning for my business this year.
A cold winter walk with my son,
found us standing there starring at this tree
yet another talking tree. Only this time.
a photo of the tree was to be part of a
photo challenge

Do I dare, pose the question of this tree?

Is your target in sight?

the root of the matter

What happens when you plant a seed?

dirt ... water, sun, air

When you plant the bulbs in the fall

dirt ... water, sun, air

When do you expect the bloom

dirt ... water, sun, air

What comes first ...

after planting season

do you know, where your buttercups are?

do you know, where you planted that extra tulip?

must you wait through the

for SPRING & SUMMER to harvest

are yoU sharing secrets

If you reveal your secrets to the wind you should not blame the wind
for revealing them to the trees.

is the earth moving or is it just me?

Is the earth moving or is it just me? Sometimes, things get so crazy, I just
have to stop and watch it again and again. My favorite movie, that is.
I feel like, I'm surrounded by em. Like there everywhere. GIants or are they
just big ants?

I'm so thankful for the pause button. I'm so thankful for the ability
to express. I'm so thankful for the freedom of rest.

I began working on my teaching plans, that's right Teaching plans. In High School ... I pursued Art, Graphic Arts and Home Economics with the hope of becoming an Art Teacher ... but the economy was bad and Art was being cut from most public school programs, so design school looked awesome & Bill Blass was on the Board at O'More College of Design.

The Classes ...

Wake UP ...
A ten week workshop designed to renew the artist in you. Rediscover & develop your creativity as you embrace the
idea of  collaborating  with the Holy Spirit.

Journey 2 Mixed Media ...

Above the fold ... publishing terms exposed

The other night or yesterday, I don't remember when. Let's just say this week, I learned a new blogging trick, while listening to Michael A. Stelzner on a webinar in which he pointed out nine successful blogs. He also took the time to identify some critical aspects of their blogs. One thing he pointed out was placing social media share buttons above the fold.

I worked in the publishing industry long enough to know, not everyone understands what ... above the fold means.

Allow me to illustrate with some photos ...

above the fold

below the fold

Tomorrow, I'll discuss CUT and KILL as publishing industry terms. Let me know in the comments if this helped at all.

that's your little red wagon ...

Daddy used to always say, "that's your  little red wagon & you can either push it or pull it." Not a word was said about flipping it over and letting the wheels spin. Sometimes we simply must check out the flip side of the situation. No this wagon will not travel far in this position. But it's just a little more than fun to watch the wheels turn.

The wheels in my head, have been spinning & spinning lately as I continue to hammer out the bits & pieces of my biz plan for the next eighteen months or so.

What about you, is your mind still spinning with new ideas & new plans for this new year, or have you found a way to stop all the spinning & focus on the task at hand. The WORK.

Moxie Art Supply & Studio School

Moxie Art Supply & Studio School ... photo by Russ Hilliard

First order of business today was rejection.

Or, so I thought.

I worked up enough courage & nerve to approach a local retail store about buying a few of my products today. Then, with my business cards, just barely out of my coat pocket. I got the LOOK, you know the LOOK ... the I'm so busy unpacking this box look ... to stop & deal with the likes of you LOOK. Well, I'm not the one. Worked in retail for too many long years to take the LOOK ... so I politely asked for more information & a pen. You know I had a pen in my pocket ... I just needed to see some movement from this clerk.

Then, desperate to find something new, something FRESH ... I kept driving ... till I stumbled upon Moxie Art Supply & Studio School.

The sight of slick new tubes of paint, canvas by the yard & by the board gave
this rejected soul a whole new reason to smile.

Rejection is just a side step in the journey ... then it's back to the path!

Do you have a FALLback plan?

Do you have a FALLback plan?
I do

But, It would take a lot longer to get there from here
but just in case things don't work out

as I've plan or hoped & life unexpected happens ...

you know ..........................
... the new 9ft. fence
... the new roof
... the crawl space
... the driveway repairs
& so much more ...

and we have to leave this little ranch ...
due to safety or financial reasons
or both
then I have this little thing, my son and his friends call

the FALLback plan
I know one day with enough
hard work and determination

we would arrive

at a whole new set of issues

either way

I'm looking forward to the

joy of the challenge!

Oh, Baby Business Notes

This year marks the 10 year anniversary of east wind productions. Ten years is a long time to be in the same type of business. Ten years ago the business card read something about illustration, design & photography. In the past ten years I've learned a lot about being a small business owner. Working with more than forty small business & non profits has allowed me to broaden my knowledge base a bit.

What's all this got to do with you ... you say ...

Well this is it ... For the 2011 business year, I will be creating a quarterly  business notes publication, which I have titled Oh, Baby Business Notes.  The notes will be about current creative business concerns  ... like ... did you know that Pay-Pal & ebay will be reporting your transactions to the IRS this year.

Oh, Baby Business Notes will arrive in your In-Box at the end of each quarter. All you need to do is sign up to receive em.
